The Procession is a moving and ethereal march from one world to the next, a celebration of women in all their might and tenderness. Influenced by Lampedusa’s The Leopard, Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita, and all the memorable women in Fellini’s films, I thought about the female as a gatekeeper who takes you between liminal spaces from reality to dreams, from life to death.
I combined this notion with my love of Japan - the extraordinary prints of Hokusai and the brutal yet romantic films of 1970s action start Meiko Kaji - and took Fellini through a dream to Japan, to meet his ultimate muse: the Woman... a prophet, a lover, a warrior.
